How to Have a Safe Halloween with Your Pet

Safe Halloween with Your Pet

When it's spooky season, Halloween comes around and brings fun for people of all ages. However, most of the festivities aren't for pets. There are many opportunities for your pet to get hurt, so make sure to take a few precautions this Halloween season. Our veterinarians at Desert East Animal Hospital in El Paso have put together a little guide to keep your furry friends safe on Halloween.

Keep Candy Away

Candy shouldn't be eaten by your pets, but they will smell the scents and want to have some. Some items, such as chocolate pieces, are poisonous to pets and others will be empty calories that can make your pet pack on some pounds. Always keep the Halloween candy well away from your pet. It can help to designate an area for the candy that your pet can't reach and keep it in that area so that none of it is loose in your home.

Avoid Most Costumes

If a pet isn't used to wearing clothing, suddenly being put into a complicated costume can be terrifying. A restrictive costume can also be painful or get tangled and cause pain. It's best not to wear a costume that consists of more than a scarf or a hat. The pet's comfort is more important than any picture opportunities.

Contain Your Pet

On Halloween, the door will get opened again and again throughout the evening. This means that your pet has a lot of opportunities to escape and go on an adventure. To prevent this from happening, be aware of where your pet is at all times. It can be helpful to keep them in an interior room so that there's no danger of them going out and getting hurt. It's also best to keep your pet away from the door because they may get scared by pranksters or even face danger from those who aren't up to any good.

Keep Your Pets Safe on Halloween

When you are getting ready for Halloween, don't forget the safety of your pet. Keep them from being a part of most of the festivities to make sure they won't get hurt.
