Tips for Keeping Your Cat Healthy

Cat Healthy

Your cat counts on you for pretty much everything. You provide food, water, shelter, and healthcare. Regular veterinarian visits are part of what is required of a good pet parent. If you need healthcare for your cat in El Paso, our veterinarians at Desert East Animal Hospital offer all of the services that your cat needs for a long, healthy life.

Frequent Veterinary Care

An adult cat should be examined by a veterinarian at least once a year. In your cat's first year, there will be multiple visits to provide the initial care that your kitten will require. An elderly cat will also need to visit more often. Talk to your vet about how many visits are required.

Vaccinations

Only one vaccination is required by law in the state of Texas, which is rabies. The vaccination must be received by 4 months of age. The core vaccines that are recommended for cats are (FCV) feline calicivirus; (FHV-1) feline herpesvirus-1; (FPV) feline panleukopenia; and (FeLV) feline leukemia. These are all serious, even life-threatening diseases that you, as a caring pet parent, should get vaccines for your cat.

The non-core vaccines that are an option for your cat are bordetella and chlamydia. Bordetella vaccines are required if you are going to be boarding your cat and if they have contact with other cats. Chlamydia is a bacterium that causes upper respiratory infections in cats. These are lifestyle vaccines and if your cat isn't boarded or visiting with cats outside your household they may not be necessary.

Spaying and Neutering

Spaying or neutering is one of the most important things you can do for your cats to keep them healthy. Going into heat can be an unpleasant situation for both you and your cat.

Food and Water

Clean fresh water and healthy food are also important to the general health of your cat and long life.
