What Is an Emergency Vet?

An emergency vet is a veterinarian who specializes in veterinary emergencies. Some emergency veterinarians work full-time at an emergency animal hospital, while others do part-time emergency work at their clinic on nights and weekends.

Signs That Your Pet May Need Emergency Care

Anything can happen to your pet. Your cat or dog may need emergency help because of a severe injury, heatstroke, an insect sting, life-threatening situation, or poisoning. Here are the most common signs that signal your four-legged friend needs immediate medical help:

  • Rapid breathing
  • Rapid or weak pulse
  • Pale gums
  • Inability to stand
  • Apparent paralysis
  • Body temperature changes
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Seizures

First Aid Treatment You Can Do at Home

In most cases, emergency situations require immediate medical attention. However, there are certain things you can do in order to stabilize your pet for transportation:

  • In case of excessive bleeding, apply pressure to the wound
  • If your dog or cat is choking, try to remove the blockage
  • If you are not able to remove a foreign object, you can try a modified version of the Heimlich maneuver.  To perform this maneuver, you need to put your hands on either side of the pet's rib cage and apply pressure. It may help to dislodge the foreign object your animal is choking on.

Tips for Transporting Your Pet to a Veterinary Clinic in an Emergency

  • Carefully transport your pet to your car. Make sure to avoid moving your pet’s head, neck, or spine. If your pet is small enough, place him in a secure and safe carrier.
  • Keep your pet calm during the journey.  It is normal for a pet to feel nervous and scared in this situation. Your task is to keep him quiet and still. Bringing a favorite blanket can help keep your pet at ease.
  • Call the clinic and let them know that you are coming.
