Desert East Animal Hospital is the veterinarian that many El Paso residents trust when their pet needs surgery. When your pet is in need of any type of veterinary surgery, even just a routine spay or neuter procedure, you want to know that your veterinarian and the rest of the animal hospital staff will do everything possible to make your furry friend feel comfortable and safe. We are family-owned and we treat each of our patients as though are family as well.
When Surgery Is Necessary
The most common pet surgery performed at our animal hospital is a routine spay and neuter on dogs and cats. There are of course other times when we need to perform more extensive surgeries. Dogs especially have a tendency of eating things that they shouldn't, which can cause impactions. Pets also fall victim to broken bones and other illnesses that require surgery. This creates a stressful situation for both you and your pet. Knowing what to expect can help ease some of the fear you may be experiencing.
Feel free to take the time to ask our staff any questions you have regarding the reason for the surgery, what the procedure will be like, and what you can expect the surgery to accomplish. We will be available to answer any questions to help put you at ease. When you feel comfortable, your pet will feel more comfortable as well.
Preparation Through Aftercare
You will be instructed on what needs to be done prior to surgery. In most cases, this will involve not allowing your pet to eat for several hours before the procedure. This can be difficult but understand it prevents your pet from experiencing problems during the anesthetic.
In most cases, you will be asked to leave your pet with us and we will call you when the procedure is finished and your pet is beginning to wake up. Keeping them overnight is not unusual.
When you come to pick up your pet, we will go over what we did and give you instructions on what you need to do during the healing process. You will be given any medications, instructions, and details for a follow-up visit. Finally, you will be told what signs to look for that might indicate an infection or other issues.
